Update

What a couple of days! We were busy all day and most of the night on the ambulance yesterday. Lots of calls and just a few hours of sleep. Although one call was more interesting than usual; for us anyway, I'm sure the young man didn't feel that way!

He was hanging a picture when it broke and the edge of the glass cut open his upper right arm. The laceration started about half way down his bicep and was about 5-6 inches from the top to around the inside of his arm to the underside. It was over a 1/2 inch deep and sliced the brachial artery; which the is main artery running through your arm.

The main treatments for a major laceration is: elevate the area (as much as possible), place a bandage (whatever you have) and use direct pressure on the area and if that doesn't stop the bleeding the find the pulse located above the injury, the side closest to the heart and put strong pressure with one or more fingers on the pulse. This will occlude the artery itself and significantly slow the bleeding and allow clotting to occur.

Good luck!

  1. What a scary experience for him. I will not ask all the gory details that I want to know because I am turning over a new leaf in life. I will just have to live with my imagination..... (hope they get the walls and carpets clean ..... opps that was just my imagination talking.)
